Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 5-cup-capacity ovenproof dish.
Sit flour, baking powder and cocoa into a bowl. Stir in sugar.
Place butter and milk in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until butter melts. Remove from heat. Stir in essence. Add butter mixture to dry ingredients. Mix well.
spread evenly over the base of the dish.
To make the topping, mix sugar and cocoa together in a cup. Sprinkle over pudding. Carefully pour coffee over pudding - do not stir.
Bake for 40-45 minutes.
Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
